High School Musical – The Full Stage Production, the phenomenally successful stage production of Disney Channel’s smash hit original movie continues to wow audiences across the globe. On Friday, 28th of November, 2008, the show with its 32-member South African cast and 11-piece band opens at Artscape, Cape Town thereafter moving to The Teatro at Montecasino, opening on Saturday, 31st of January, 2009.
The principal roles are filled by a unique mix of well-known stage and television performers together with South Africa’s freshest, youngest new faces, exceptional talent with loads of enthusiasm, hope and determination to make their mark in the entertainment industry.
The American TV and movie productions of High School Musical turned its young leads, Zac Efron and Vanessa Hudgens into international superstars. Now, the South African stage production of this international hit gives local young performers the chance of a life-time to show case their talents and possibly gain international recognition. Their roles in High School Musical – The Full Stage Production will present them with the unique opportunity to learn whilst sharing the stage and working with high caliber and award-winning performers Kate Normington and Robert Finlayson. The young cast members will also benefit enormously working under a multi-talented local and international creative team.
Brought to you by MTN, High School Musical – The Full Stage Production is produced by leading South African theatre impresario’s Pieter Toerien and Hazel Feldman. Presented by Disney Theatrical Productions, the stage adaptation by David Simpatico is not a scene-for-scene replica of the film but so close to the original Disney Channel High School Musical movie, that any changes mostly go unnoticed by adoring fans. The stage production includes all the songs from the original soundtrack plus two new songs, “Counting on You” and “Cellular Fusion”. In several instances, the entire ensemble now performs songs that were formally sung exclusively by the leads in the movie version.
Following its premiere in Chicago in August 2007, High School Musical – The Full Stage Production has played sold out seasons in more than 40 cities across the USA. The current tour of the United Kingdom has broken all box office records and future productions are scheduled for Spain, Italy, France and Holland. December 2008 sees the official opening of High School Musical – The Full Stage Production in Cape Town and Sydney, Australia.
