Firstly, let’s talk about its location in Craighall Park – in the little pocket of shops that comprise Shepherd Market, on Jan Smuts Avenue (before the left-hand off-ramp to William Nicol). It’s small but offers free off-road parking, a rustic home-from-home appeal, and the option to eat in or pick up take away. Yes, please!
Once there, I realised that I had, in fact, tasted Soul Souvlaki’s” Greek Street Food” before – but many years ago at Market on Main. Owner Dino then went on to launch his first physical store in Maboneng, a double-storey venue that he created out of an old shipping container. The creativity witnessed in the venue is further transferred to the food, but more on that in a moment.
Soul Souvlaki is his latest offering and, by all accounts, I was in for a treat. The shop is only open from 10:00 – 20:00, which necessitated a quick casual lunch with a friend before the school run (it’s called a “working lunch”, people – stop judging me!)
The result? I am a fan! I adore tapas as I very often get bored with food (I have FADD – Food ADD) and happily created my own meze platter comprising grilled chilli feta, tzatziki dip, grilled halloumi, lamb kebabs, pita bread, eggplant dip and mixed olives.
My friend had the lamb souvlaki in pita, which she absolutely adored, followed by the baklava with vanilla ice cream and honey. I may have eaten most of it while she was on the phone…
The prices are exceptionally reasonable, the service is attentive and the decor is cosy and casual. All in all, I will definitely be back (and have subsequently decided to switch from a low carb to a Mediterranean diet with immediate effect!)
