Have you ever thought of having an inner-city wedding? To some, getting hitched in Jozi CBD sounds like a mission when in reality, it’s far from it. There is beauty to be found in the old industrial sites. From De Stijl architecture to the seven manmade wonders of Joburg, the city boasts some of the most eclectic and intriguing buildings on the continent. We’re talking banquet halls fit for kings and Juliette balconies straight out of romantic movies. Getting married in town is a great alternative to having your big day out in the countryside. Plus it’s something unique.

Let’s dive head-first into our favourite wedding venue, shall we? Situated in the heart of Johannesburg’s art and culture precinct, Newtown, is Turbine Hall. From Ntemi Piliso Street, the building looks like a massive old factory but once inside, it unfolds as a thing of industrial beauty. Turbine Hall is a historically important building. This colossal structure served as one of the city’s largest steam-driven power stations the 1920s. By the start of the swinging 60s, the city’s power demand had greatly surpassed the amount which the station could produce. It was decommissioned and kept as a backup power source.

History lesson aside, let’s get cracking about why we love it so much. Today, Turbine Hall is home to the annual Turbine Art Fair and plays a significant role in the Newtown art scene. Managed by Forum Company, Turbine Hall has all the bells and whistles when it comes to hosting events and offers massive halls for private weddings under one humongous roof.

There are different sections that can cater to different wedding-party sizes, from intimate groups of 60 people to huge celebrations of 280 seated. Turbine Hall also has a fully equipped kitchen and an executive chef who can cater to all your culinary needs.

Do yourself a favour and check Turbine Hall out — we’re convinced you’ll be blown away by how amazing it is and how it’ll create the perfect backdrop for your picture-perfect wedding. For more information, click here.
