*Please note that due to the current third wave of COVID-19 infections in Gauteng, all scheduled shows at the WITS Planetarium have been cancelled until further notice.

The WITS Planetarium was the first full-sized planetarium in Africa, and only the second in the Southern Hemisphere when it was erected in 1960. This icon of exploration and scientific curiosity still stands at the University of the Witwatersrand in Braamfontein. You've probably noticed it while driving along the M1 highway into the city centre. The Planetarium is fully operational and is open for public shows and school outings. If you've been looking for something fun and educational to do with your kids during the school holidays, this is the place to be. Here's what the Planetarium has on offer for children aged 5 - 12:

Go On A Space Mission

Kiddies aged 5 - 8 are invited to go on an epic space travel mission with Thomas the Astronomer at the WITS Planetarium. This pre-recorded show takes children on an exciting adventure through the constellations. Thomas and his friends will also make a short stop on the moon to learn all about the Apollo explorers and the phases of the moon. From here, you'll jet off into the solar system to visit Thomas' favourite planets and take a thrilling ride on a comet! The show is 60 minutes long and is the perfect entertainment for both young and old. Make sure to book your tickets at least 24 hours in advance.

Tickets are available on Webtickets.

Blast Off On A Rocket!

Science is wonderfully exciting. Help foster a love for experimentation and discovering in your child by booking tickets to The Secret of the Cardboard Rocket - an interactive and educational show for children aged 8 - 12. By the time children leave primary school they should have a sound knowledge of our solar system and all its planets. The Planetarium offers fantastic learning opportunities and the chance to discover new facts about our universe. You'll blast off into the atmosphere and travel straight up to the moon on an imaginary rocket. Come fly over Venus and take a trip around Mars before landing back down on Earth. Parents, you might even learn a thing or two. Book your tickets ASAP because they sell out fast.

Tickets are available on Webtickets.
