Steyn City, the mega mixed-use development by Auto & General billionaire boss Douw Steyn, is situated in the Dainfern Valley and totals a whopping 2 000 acres of residential parkland. At the time of writing, it comprised 93 apartments, 64 clusters and 220 freehold stands. Its prime location between Joburg and Pretoria is also within the fastest-growing node in South Africa.
The vision was to create a completely self-contained city where everything you need from shops, restaurants, cafés, gyms, educational facilities and even offices are on your doorstep. On completion, Steyn City will include a school, a retirement village and two retail centres, one apparently as big as Melrose Arch! Steyn City even has its own hospital, which is immune to load-shedding and boasts some of the fastest high-speed Internet in the province.
And speaking of everything on your doorstep, Steyn City motivates residents to spend more time outside with an equestrian centre and bridle paths, fishing lakes, soccer pitches, cycling and running paths, tennis courts, swimming pools and the Jack Nicklaus 18-hole golf course. As Steyn City’s marketers like to joke, it’s not a golf estate but an estate with a golf course.
In front of the golf course, you will find a restaurant so fancy that diners are catered to by appointment only. Nineteen, the clubhouse restaurant and bar, is on par with the best in the world. Come and take in the magnificent views and imagine yourself teeing off with a masterful rump steak, or simply relax and enjoy a refreshing drink. The clubhouse is an architectural masterpiece, with a camouflaged ‘planted’ roof that blends in with the natural landscape.
The design principle of Steyn City is that it’s not about the architecture but about an idyllic lifestyle. The instruction to the architects was that there should be no one architectural theme to Steyn City, giving homeowners the freedom to express their own preferences. All residences are built according to green principles and security at the estate is top notch.
Over and above the upmarket lifestyle, Steyn City encourages a sense of community and hosts events to bring residents together. It’s also a place where children can safely play on the streets like back in the day. Idyllic indeed.
