Exit/Exist With The Vuyani Dance Company

Vuyani Dance Company present Exit/Exist at The Market Theatre this May. Exploring memory as a theme in a modern South African debate around land and identity, this piece directed by James Ngcobo is a must-see.

What Is It?

Vuyani Dance Theatre in association with The Market Theatre present Gregory Maqoma’s “Exit/Exist”. The show makes its final stop at the Market Theatre following an international tour. Returning for a 10 day season, the show traces the memory of Maqoma’s distant ancestor, Chief Jongumsobomvu Maqoma, who is renowned as one of the greatest Xhosa leaders of his time. Born in 1798, Chief Maqoma was arrested when he ordered English colonisers to liberate Xhosa land. He died on Robben Island in 1873. Directed by James Ngcobo, Maqoma is accompanied on stage by four South African singers and a guitarist Giuliano Modarelli.  This music ensemble helps to facilitate the telling of the story through their harmonious vocals in combination with Maqoma’s powerful, but delicate performance. If you are looking for a unique dance theatre experience, visit the Market Theatre to see “Exit/Exist”. You won’t regret it.
