Because the caves are usually quiet on these two days, no tickets need to be purchased online. The special is thus only available to walk in guests.
Maropeng in Setswana meaning, “returning to the place of origin.” It was named a World Heritage site in 1999. The Maropeng Visitor Centre showcases and focuses on the development of human ancestors. It is at this Centre where you will learn about the evolutionary processes, see fossils and learn about the origins of humankind.
A five minute drive from Maropeng will lead you to the Sterkfontein Caves where you’ll be able to see History come alive as the caves are located where notable discoveries were made including the famous fossils, Mrs Ples and Little Foot. The tour length is about 45 minutes long. It is recommended that only fit and healthy individuals attempt the tour as there are sections where you need to bend, crawl and climb numerous steps. So, don’t forget to put on your walking shoes and takkies!
It is recommended that you look online at the time slots as the tours start at each hour between 09:00 and 16:00. Moreover, it is requested that you arrive at least 15 minutes before the slot. If you are late, your ticket will be forfeited without a refund. Keeping in line with COVID regulations, you will be scanned and sanitised at the entrance.
