September marks Deaf Awareness Month, coinciding with the International Week for the Deaf and serves to honour the inaugural World Congress of the World Federation of the Deaf held in September 1951. Save the date for the annual Silent Walk and Run on Saturday, 16 September 2023.
Throughout Deaf Awareness Month, diverse activities commemorate this occasion. Notably, the Annual #SilentWalk&Run engages families and the hearing community. This event encourages participants to undertake the walk or run. Fostering a deeper appreciation for the daily experiences of the Deaf and hard-of-hearing community. Since its launch in 2016, the #SilentWalk&Run has consistently garnered heightened engagement, elevating awareness of the Deaf community and enhancing understanding of Deafness.
The yearly #SilentWalk&Run encompasses more than the walk and run itself, featuring ancillary activities such as Deaf Tennis, Silent Yoga, Silent Aerobics, and a designated children’s play area. Funds generated from the walk and run registrations contribute to the Neema Foundation for the Deaf, an organisation dedicated to aiding Deaf victims of domestic violence. Hosted at Marks Park in Emmarentia, 5km walk and run costs R150 per person.
