2024 presents the 8th Annual #SilentWalk&Run to be hosted on the 14th of September 2024 and the starting time is at 08:00 to ensure maximum participation as well as to accommodate participants coming from afar.
The #SilentWalk&Run is an annual family fun event full of numerous activities intended at inviting members of the hearing community to participate in the walk/run for them to gain a better understanding of the Deaf and hard-of-hearing community’s daily lives and experience the “world of silence” by participating in the walk/run in silence.
September is Deaf Awareness Month in South Africa, and an initiative started by the World Congress of the World Federation for the Deaf in September 1958 aimed to commemorate and bring awareness to Deafness through various activities.
The theme affords an opportunity for Deaf awareness education, contributing to positive change and breaking down stereotypical barriers. Furthermore, the #SilentWalk&Run affords the hearing community an opportunity to walk in the shoes of the Deaf and those who are hard of hearing by participating and interacting in the #SilentWalk&Run and assisting with raising funds to fight against GBV.
The #SilentWalk&Run2024 will also infuse the 30 years of South Africa’s democracy with the highlight of the language being recognised as the country’s 12th official language and encourage the hearing community to annually test the quality of hearing for early detection and intervention.
