Step into the past and present of Braamfontein with the Johannesburg Heritage Foundation on Saturday, 17 June 2023. Braamfontein, one of the original farms predating Johannesburg, is now a vibrant part of the city. The suburb is teeming with university students, businesses, and residents.
What Can I Expect From Braamfontein – Old And New Tour?
The walking tour begins at the Romanesque-Revival Holy Trinity Church, one of the largest buildings in the area when it was completed in 1938. From there, you’ll explore the old convent transformed into the Nunnery Theatre for the Wits School of Dramatic Arts in a single weekend in 1970.
Continuing with the performing arts theme, you’ll visit the old Alexander Theatre, designed in the Scandinavian style for the Johannesburg Repertory Theatre group in 1951. This location became the newly built home of the Joburg Ballet School. Along the way, you’ll take a moment to appreciate the newly landscaped Liberty Indwe Park. If time allows, enjoy a coffee from one of the trendy local eateries.
Please ensure to wear comfortable walking shoes and bring along a hat, sunblock, and water for this fascinating journey through Braamfontein’s history and its present-day vibrancy. Tickets are available from R150.
