What Can I Expect From The Annual June 16 Bike Ride?
16 June, marks the anniversary of a significant event that played a crucial role in the liberation of political prisoners in the early 1990s. In 1976, 20,000 students from across Soweto staged a peaceful protest that was met with brutal force by the Apartheid Police. This resulted in the tragic loss of hundreds of young lives, including Hastings Ndlovu and Hector Pieterson. The Annual June 16 Ride is a tribute to these brave youths of the Soweto Uprising who sacrificed their lives.
The cycling route will take you to key historical sites, starting from Morris Isaacson High School, the origin point of the student march. Furthermore, you’ll pause at Mofolo to visit the home of Robert Sobukwe, the founder of the PAC (Pan-African Congress).
You’ll then trace the path of the student march to the iconic Vilakazi Street, home to Desmond Tutu and Nelson Mandela. A stop will also be made at the exact location where Hector Pieterson tragically lost his life. Followed by a visit to the home of Hastings Ndlovu. The tour concludes at the Hector Pieterson Memorial Site and Museum, a hub of activity on this historic day.
After the tour, enjoy a delicious warm lunch at the Outdoor Restaurant. Join Lebo’s Soweto Backpackers on June 16th, as they honor Youth Day and remember the brave souls who paved the way for our freedom.
