Enjoying Summer For R80 Or Less

The Jacarandas are blooming in full swing and summer has officially crashed like a wave over the city. Here are some cool things to do in and around Jozi that won’t break the bank.

Joburg Zoo – R80

Hang out with the most exotic animals from around the continent and the world, learn about creepy crawly critters and take a walk on the wild side at the Joburg Zoo. The ice cream is cold, the food hot and the entrance fee low enough not to break the bank, so be sure to pay a visit to the fury, friendly and downright dangerous animals at the zoo. It’s super educational and a great way to spend the day.

Montecasino Bird Gardens – R70

There’s more to Montecasino than gaming, good food, and cool entertainment. Visit the Montecasino Bird Gardens and make new friends… feathery friends, that is. Wander around enchanted walkways and listen to the most exotic birds in Jozi coo and caw between lush trees and foliage. It is an experience to be shared with the whole family or even a great first date idea.

Hennops Hiking Trail – R60

Nothing beats rekindling with nature after a long and unforgiving winter. Hit the Hennops Hiking Trail with your hiking socks pulled up high and your hiking boots strapped on tight. Hennops is known as one of the best hiking trails around Johannesburg and is a great and cheap way to spend an outing.

WITS Planetarium – R40

Explore the known universe from the comfort of the WITS Planetarium. The planetarium, situated on the university’s east campus, opened to the public during the swinging 60s and has educated and entertained generations before and will keep doing so for generations to come.

Credo Mutwa Cultural Village – Free

The keeper of the tribe and historian of the Zulu people, Credo Mutwa has an eery and interesting cultural village in Soweto which is open to the public on a free basis. Explore the sights and sounds of local village life and learn about the man who predicted the AIDS virus and the 9/11 Twin Tower attack. It is by far one of the coolest things to do for free.
