Sterkfontein Half Day Trip
The Sterkfontein Caves, located in the Cradle of Humankind, a World Heritage Site, are known for their fossil finds. Kids can look forward to guided tours that go deep into the caves, offering the opportunity to see the famous Mrs Ples, a 2.1 million-year-old skull, and Little Foot, an almost complete skeleton that is more than 3 million years old. Thousands of paleontology enthusiasts make the pilgrimage here from across the globe every year and we get to boast about it being in our backyard!
The University of Johannesburg has invested in the future of technology in South Africa by enticing and entertaining younger scholars at their famous TechnoLab. The TechLab offers workshops in technology for children of all ages. The workshops follow the national curriculum, are outcomes-based and focus on learning. They also offer holiday club events, which cost R70 per child (price correct at the time of writing).
Friends Of Kloofendal Nature Reserve
Introduce the young ones to the Kloofendal Nature Reserve and they will love the outdoors forever. This reserve, situated in the suburb of Kloofendal, Roodepoort, features plenty of hiking trails and many different species of fauna and flora. All events include walks in the reserve and are led by qualified guides. The Friends of Kloofendal Display Centre can be found opposite the stamp mills.
The WITS Planetarium
We’ve written about the planetarium at WITS quite a bit, and it’s because we love the place so much. It’s an educational outing for kids but it is also a great experience for the entire family. The WITS Planetarium offers family and scholar rates and their schedule can be viewed on their website, which is updated regularly. Here, the little ones can learn about the cosmos and what goes on outside our atmosphere. Every visit brings something new with it, so you can bank on returning!
Sci-Bono Discovery Centre
For fun that’s not just exciting but educational too, make sure you pay a visit to the Sci-Bono Discovery Centre in the CBD. Other than boasting interesting and cool exhibitions, they also have regular holiday programmes. You can expect everything from creating your own fossils and doing excavations to experimenting with chemistry and mechatronics.
Let your kids have a blast with the Nutty Scientist and science! Nutty Scientists® South Africa Camps are an innovative form of “edutainment” perfect for kids of all ages. Combining fun with learning, each camp offers an educational theme that keeps kids entertained and engaged from day to day. One new theme is learned each day, and all activities available are related to this theme, therefore kids will stay focused on one subject matter, solidifying the concept.
