Melrose Arch Lights Up This Festive Season
Melrose Arch is bringing the magic back to Christmas this festive season with dazzling Christmas light displays throughout the precinct, as well as plenty of fun for the whole family. Remember the days when we’d pile into the car and drive through the streets of the city, admiring the beautiful Christmas lights on display? Those days may be long gone, but Melrose Arch is reviving the tradition! Also, all proceeds from Destination Christmas at Melrose Arch will go to the Smile Foundation, which is Melrose Arch’s CSI partner. This Christmastime, stars on the giant Tree of Stars on the Piazza were sold to raise money for the Smile Foundation.
Melrose Arch will dazzle the city with a spectacular display of lights and a new Fantasy Garden on the Piazza. All the sparkling lights will be switched on on Friday, 22 November 2019 at 18:30 with a special ceremony featuring some of South Africa’s most popular singers. The ever-popular Mi Casa and Mzansi Youth Choir are the highlights of this year’s ceremony. Be sure to check out the other restaurants at Melrose Arch as well.
The award-winning Mi Casa has been a firm favourite on the South African music scene for many years. The trio – J’Something, Mo-T and Dr Duda – will get everyone singing and dancing as they wait for the lights to be turned on.
The Mzansi Youth Choir is renowned for its pulsating energy and youthful enthusiasm and, of course, the choir’s incredible voices constantly attract rave reviews. The Mzansi Youth Choir will be spreading festive joy by singing everyone’s favourite Christmas carols.
What To Expect This Year
From 22 November 2019 – 05 January 2020, the precinct will come to life with an exciting festive entertainment programme, perfect for the whole family.
The Fantasy Garden on the Piazza
From 22 November 2019 – 22 December 2019, the Fantasy Garden on the Piazza is sure to enchant the entire family. The Piazza will feature four small gardens, each one fantastical and whimsical, with its own theme. Designed by three well-known landscapers, there’ll be an arid, water-wise garden; a more traditional green landscape; a vertical display and a bushveld-style garden in partnership with The Boucher Legacy, an organisation that fights rhino poaching. Beautiful during the day, they’ll be breathtaking at night, when they are enhanced by Christmas lights and illuminated displays.
A golden carriage, a Chinese dragon, a picturesque snow scene and cute Christmas characters will thrill the little ones, while a canopy of fairy lights over the Piazza will create a magical atmosphere.
The Melrose Arch Christmas Market
Of course, there’s more Christmas magic in store for Melrose Arch visitors this festive season. Do a little shopping and indulging at the Christmas Market, which will be held on the Square from Wednesday, 27 November 2019 to Saturday, 30 November 2019 from 16:00 to 21:00. You can expect to see Christmas decor and gifts, special handcrafted items, delicious food and sweet treats, jewellery, ladies’ and kids’ clothing, toys, homeware, accessories and more.
Another festive favourite, the well-known Jeppe Pipe Band will return to Melrose Arch on Friday, 06 December 2019 at 18:30 to add to the jolly spirit in the precinct, playing favourites like Scotland the Brave, Jingle Bells, Amazing Grace and Little Drummer Boy.
Christmas wouldn’t be Christmas without a special visit from Santa Claus, so he will be visiting the precinct whenever there’s an event taking place at Melrose Arch (on 22 November 2019, 27 – 30 November 2019 and 06 December 2019).
