Roodepoort Theatre makes up one-third of the Joburg City Theatres amalgamation. The second oldest of the three major theatre houses in Johannesburg, Roodepoort Theatre has a history of producing world-class theatre. The theatre was established in 1980, and quickly became a fully operational producing theatre. For close to three decades, the Roodepoort Theatre (then known as the Pro Musica Theatre) presented some of the most popular operas and symphony concerts. By 2008, there had been over 400 opera performances presented at the theatre. The Roodepoort Theatre certainly deserves its legacy as one of the top concert halls in Johannesburg!
Of course, times and tastes change. The theatre has adapted its output to suit contemporary audience interests. They have also sought to serve the surrounding community through outreach programmes. Pro Musica was tasked with the launch of the Soweto Theatre in 2012, and was rebranded as the Roodepoort Theatre the following year. It is now one of the most popular venues for dance shows, live music performances and comedy specials. Join the Roodepoort Theatre this May for a variety of spectacular shows.
