Classic Indian Food Made With Love At Thali


Tswana Hippie took a trip to India without even leaving Joburg. Here’s her take on the Indian restaurant, Thali.


Sometimes all you need is a hearty meal filled with spice, love and all things nice. Then there are times when you’d like to enjoy this at a restaurant where you aren’t just another patron and without having to part with copious amounts of money.

These days it’s rare to find a restaurant where everyone gets preferential treatment, a scrumptious meal and great service, all at a reasonable price – however, it’s a normal thing at Thali.

Thali is a new classic Indian restaurant that’s made a home in Maboneng. The restaurant is family owned and run by Vishnu and Nadine, a married couple who make eating there a homey experience. From the onset, you’re welcomed in with a smile, given a place to sit and walked through the menu if you’re not sure about what to order or what each dish is. Naiden and her team almost personalise your meal with thoughtful care.

I had the lamb thali which is a round platter made up off various dishes. The idea behind a thali is to offer six different flavours of sweet, salt, bitter, sour, astringent and spicy on one single plate. On my thali there was lamb served in a thick and spicy curry, rice, roti and three veggie sides.

The menu also includes bunny chow, rotis, curries, vegetarian meals and breyanis – a variety of Indian favourites that are prepared with a classic South African twist. And if you’re feeling daring then I suggest you try the chef’s pick of the day. Nadine will definitely make sure that you’re pleased with your meal.

They don’t sell alcohol in the restaurant but Shakers, a bar, is just outside and you can order a drink from there and enjoy it inside Thali.
