What exactly do we define as American food in Johannesburg? Whether they invented the hamburger or not is up for debate, but there's no question that its now synonymous with American food. It's usually the default for many when it comes to describing the USA’s contribution to culinary delights.

The country is actually famous for many other types of cuisine that you can find right here in Johannesburg. We've compiled some places that will feed your craving for North American food when a humble burger just won't do.

Louise and Anna

When it comes to American food in Johannesburg, you've got to mention Louise and Anna. Located in Craighall Park, where Shucked oyster bar used to be, it is in prime position if you want to see and be seen. Its name is a play on the southern state of Louisiana which is known for it’s multi-cultural history. French, African, American and French-Canadian culture is reflected in the state’s cuisine. Louise and Anna features a southern creole inspired menu, that they describe as a ‘new taste for the future’.

On the menu you can find everything from the Louisiana staple; jambalaya to classic American Flapjacks. What would an American themed restaurant be without a hamburger still? If you need a fix, their chicken burger served with creamy coleslaw will do the job. The lobster mac and cheese is also a menu hit and a modern take on the American favorite. With an offer to also enjoy board games and yummy cocktails, this spot is perfect for long boozy brunches that go well into the night.

Sweet Tea & Chicka Dee

This bakery and café located in Linden credits itself with bringing a slice of America to SA. You have to try their signature biscuit sandwiches when you drop by. To most South Africans it may look like a scone, but think of a scone totally ramped up. Fillings range from pimento cheese, bacon, prosciutto and fried goat cheese. Yes, not your average scone.

If you've ever wondered what in the world shrimp and grits taste like, wonder no more and head down to this café to taste it yourself. You can also pick up American bakery favourites such as cornbread, pumpkin pie and key lime pie. The café is cheerily decorated with pineapple wallpaper, which goes along well with the overall chilled self-service vibe.

Brooklyn Brothers

If you’re looking for no fuss American bar food, look no further than Brooklyn Brothers. The chain restaurant offers all that and then some. New York is the main inspiration for this chain, which serves up a range of wings, burgers and shakes.

It has seven different locations around the city so there's bound to be one near you. You can find them in Bassonia, Bedford, Dainfern, Honeydew, Hazeldean and Melrose. They also offer a banting option for when you want to indulge without the guilt later and most of the branches are Halaal.

Mac & Rib

For those days when you need comfort food delivered straight to your door, there's Mac & Rib. This is your stop for American style flame grilled ribs and mac 'n' cheese. When it comes to American food in Johannesburg, you can't get more authentic!

Mac & Rib can be found exclusively on Uber Eats and their signature Southern Mac is definite must-try. It has cheese sauce muddled with barbecue pulled pork and topped off with mozzarella, yellow cheddar and parmesan cheese. Yum! Now, a round up of American food in Johannesburg wouldn't be complete without the ultimate aforementioned face of American cuisine: the burger. Forget McDonald’s and Burger King and get a load of these flame grilled delights.

Priding itself on avoiding additives to their meat, Harlem Kitchen promises the freshest take away burgers in the biz. You can also place your orders via WhatsApp or call. They offer ways to “fancy up your burger” with toppings as well as hot dogs, pork ribs and vegan patties, too.
