The 26th annual Poetry Africa is happening in October and will make its way to Johannesburg as part of a national tour between 6 and 8th October 2022.
What Can I Expect From Poetry Africa?
This year’s theme is Poetic (In) Justice: Voices That Breathe, Move and Transform. 2022 sees the return of the festival as a hybrid structure in the sense that some sessions will take place in Johannesburg and Durban and some of the events will be done virtually.
Here’s a snippet of what you can expect over the 3 day tour in Joburg. The theme for 6 October is “What’s a Woman’s Worth,” featuring Philippa Yaa De Villiers, Lebo Mashile, Roche Kester, Vangile Gantsho, Nomashenge and Belita Andre. The focus here is on women with performances done by women poets uncovering the worth of a woman.
Furthermore, on 7 October, the semi-final of the Slam Jam competition takes place, a highly anticipated part of the program. The finals will take place in Durban. 8th of October sees an evening of defiant poetry in terms of how its presented and the contents therein. The theme is “Tilting the Scales.”
If you are a poetry enthusiast and can’t make it to the live events then there will be a selection of seminars and readings that will be presented online. Moreover, the poetry festival has over 35 poets from South Africa, Africa, and the world!
