Spend your Sunday afternoon in Fordsburg, a suburb with a rich cultural background. Where you can expect a short history walk and take part in an ultimate foodie experience in an area known for its immigrant food culture.
The stops on the Fordsburg walking tour include; House of Schwarma, House of Baklava and Dosa’s hut for a taste of South Indian food. Also listed on the itinerary is Little Istanbul for Joburg’s best kebabs and a stop at Shalimar delights for sweetmeats. A part from its food culture, Fordsburg is known by its electic street art that you can marvel at as you loop the various streets.
The history walk will include a stroll exploring everything from The Ghandi Memorial at the Hamidia Mosque to the Rand Rebellion of 1922. The suburb’s proximity to the mines made it a perfect location to live and made commuting easy. This also made it a diverse community from its origins and is still currently one of Johannesburg’s most diverse suburbs today.
At precisely 12 o’clock, the tour guide will lead you to Mint Road. A street that is sure to hit all your senses! In this block alone, you’ll be able to find; Greek, Syrian, South-Indian, Pakistani and Turkish cuisine. There will also be an opportunity to explore the various markets for street food. Items such as samosas, spring rolls, roti and pies come to mind.
The cost per person is R240 and this does not include food and beverages.
Some Tips: Bring shopping bags as you will be buying plenty of food stuff and wear comfortable shoes as you’ll be doing a considerable amount of walking!
