1. Checkered Skirt / Pantsuit

Checks are all the rage right now. Whether monochrome, tartan or brightly coloured, this is a must-have winter item. For a more demure look, go for a calf-length checkered A-line skirt. Or, if you are feeling daring, try out the bang-on-trend pantsuit look. Both these looks are flattering on most body types, however, the pantsuit may require some tailoring to get it just right.

Styling tips:

  • Finding a shirt or blouse to match a coloured checkered skirt or pantsuit can be tricky. Single out the most prominent colour in the pattern. Then, match your shirt to that colour. Alternatively, colour block by matching complimentary colours like yellow and blue.
  • If you are afraid of looking like a Scottish highlander, go for a monochrome check pattern. Pair your skirt or pantsuit with accessories in earthy hues, like burnt orange, mustard or magenta.

Where To Get It:

Superbalist.com have a range of checkered pantsuits. Our top pick is the zip detailed wide leg trouser pants which is priced at *R251. Get it here.

Looking for something youthful and fun? Shop at Mr Price! They have an adorable check jumpsuit priced at *R179.99. Or, invest in a pleated monochrome skirt priced at *R159.99. Find your nearest store here.

2. Long Trench Coat

How long should the hemline of a trench coat be? According to this season’s runways and fashion spreads, the answer is – just above the ankle. While this may seem a little OTT and impractical (don’t designers know how easy it is to trip in heels?), there are ways to get around this tricky trend. If you are in the market for a new coat this winter, simply look out for one with extra length and volume. Colours to consider are muted neutrals, including, blush pink and camel. However, these tones may date quickly, so always make sure you have a coat in a staple colour like black, navy or brown.

Styling Tips:

Wide belts are also a must-have for the season. Style your coat with a wide belt in the same colour.

Where To Get It:

Check out this elegant, black coat available from Zando. The simple neckline should flatter most bust types, while the wide belt accentuates the waist. At *R1099, it is an investment piece.

3. Animal Print Accessories

Animal print is back! Although, we aren’t certain it ever really went extinct. This 80’s inspired print can be overwhelming to style in garments, so why not start out by adding it to a few of your must-have accessory items? From micro-bags, to gloves and even sunglasses, animal print can be introduced into your wardrobe in the most subtle way.

Styling Tips:

Whether you go for leopard spots, tiger stripes or something completely different, remember to keep it minimal.

Where To Get It:

Thrifting is a great way to get your hands on retro animal print accessories. Luckily, there are many great thrift stores and charity retailers to visit in the city. Plus, if you shop at a charity store you know that your contribution is going towards a worthy cause. Perhaps before you head out on a shopping spree this winter, take a look through your cupboard. Donating old clothes you no longer want or need is the best way to celebrate the chill.

Alternatively, shop at Zara for a variety of animal print accessories. We love their mini leopard print belt bag.

4. Cowgirl Boots

Ever dreamed of saddling up in the Wild West? Then this fashion trend is just for you. Get yourself a pair of good ol’ leather boots before winter rears its ugly head, tan leather cowgirl boots to be specific. You’ll know them when you see them, we promise – embossed floral patterns, a slight heel and a swooped cuff are the usual features. If you aren’t quite ready to embrace your inner rodeo queen, pick up a pair of ankle boots. The whole point here is to keep your feet comfy and warm, so, whatever your style is, go for it.

Styling Tips:

Wear your cowgirl boots with wide leg pants or jeans or cropped girlfriend jeans.

Where To Get It:

Looking to save? Shop online for your cowgirl boots at Zando or Superbalist. Willing to splurge? Then head to Zara for a pair of snakeskin leather cowboy ankle boots priced at *R2,599.

5. Lavender Eyeshadow

The colour for the season is lavender. While you could go all out with a floor length lavender velour dress, we think this colour is much better appreciated in small doses. So, sprinkle a little lavender eye shadow over your lids for a pop of colour. You’ll definitely stand out from the crowd and the dreary weather.

Styling Tips:

Purple hues suit most eye colours and skin tones. But, as with all make-up, it may take awhile to find your perfect shade. Mix and match different shades to create a luminous ombre effect. Or, add a little shimmer for a glamorous evening look.

Where To Get It:

Experiment with the Lavender Dreams 35 piece palette from Glamore Cosmetics. It comes with 10 semi-shimmer shades and 25 matte shades.
